Indonesian waters had the complex tidal pattern because many islands and water mass circulation patterns were affected by the monsoon and arlindo systems. On the basis of this, Marine Instrumentation Laboratory, Department of Marine Science and Technology, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Bogor Agricultural University (FPIK-IPB) created the tide gauge instrument named MONTIWALI (Mobile Tide Water Level Instrument). “At this time, we are able to produce as many as ten units per month even it can be improved depending on bookings,” said Prof. Indra Jaya, Head of Marine Instrumentation Laboratory.
There were three reasons that inspired Prof. Indra et al in developing the tide gauge instrument. First, the tide gauge instrument in the waters of the archipelago was complex and complicated. Second, all this time we bought the tide gauge instrument from outside, no one had made himself. Third, it was necessary to have the technological independece, particularly the marine technology or the maritime technology. “The making of the tide gauge instrument is one of the initial steps to realize the independence of marine technology,” continued Chairman of the Graduate Institute of Oceanology of Indonesia.
Research and development of this tool were already started five years ago. During the trial period, Marine Instrumentation Laboratory of IPB had been marketing to Hasanuddin University, Makassar, Research Center for General Fisheries, Palembang, and Hang Tuah University, Surabaya.
